The place to stay to experience Matera! ☺To truly appreciate the beauty and majesty of Matera, considered by many to be the oldest inhabited city in the world, you have to stay in the oldest part of the city. Maison d’Ax is located in the heart of the Sassi and the rooms, while very comfortable and modernized, transmit a true old-world feel and to stay here is to truly experience Matera. Getting to the property wasn’t easy, but well worth the walk. We parked at a local garage called Parcheggio Nicoletti, and for a very reasonable fee, were shuttled into and out of the Sassi area for relatively simple check in and check out. Our room (The Moon Room) was perfect. Comfortable bed with a huge bathroom, complete with sunken shower and view of the old city. It felt like stepping back in time. The staff was gracious and accommodating, making us feel welcome and appreciated. Breakfast was amazing! I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the city!

Matera is a time warp that needs to be experienced. ☺Matera is an amazing, preserved Italian time piece & Maison d’Ax is right in the heart of it. Carved right out of the rock. The hotel has these two big wood doors that open to a perfect view of the Madonna de Idris (old church carved out of the rocks) and La Gravina caves. Enjoyed a beer watching the sun on the hills after a day of walking the labyrinthine cobbled streets and stairs. Maison d’Ax has a nice little pool. Bring your suit. ☹This is no knock on Maison d’Ax; However, our cell phone GPS had difficulty with walking directions in Matera. We ended up calling Marianna from the Piazza San Francisco, used the phone as a video (Like Facetime) and she directed us to the place. It really was about the only way we were going to find it.

☺Besonders anzumerken ist das sehr zuvorkommende und hilfsbereite Personal. Sehr freundlich. Die Unterkunft ist toll, das Frühstück perfekt. Wir können das Hotel nur weiterempfehlen.
